A lot of buyers looking in the Interlakes get stuck on this question:
“How do we know if this property will actually work for us?”
Because on the surface, a lot of listings look good.
Nice photos.
Decent price.
Maybe even on a lake.
But that doesn’t mean it’s the right property.
Most buyers are trying to answer this question by:
Looking at listings online
Comparing price and acreage
Driving up for a weekend and guessing
And it gets confusing fast.
Because what you can’t see in a listing is usually what matters most.
Instead of asking:
“Is this a good property?”
You want to ask:
“Does this property fit how we’re actually going to use it?”
That’s where things start to get clearer.
When I’m helping buyers in the Interlakes, we look at this in a simple way:
If you’re planning to use it right away, ask:
Can you access it easily?
Is there space for what you want to do?
Does it feel usable without major work?
If it’s difficult from the start, chances are you won’t use it as much as you think.
A lot of buyers are thinking:
“Camp now, build later.”
That’s a great plan—if the property actually supports it.
You want to consider:
Where a future build would go
Whether the layout makes sense long-term
If anything about the land limits your options
Some properties work short-term…
But create problems later.
This part gets overlooked.
Two properties can look similar…
But feel completely different depending on:
The lake
The neighbourhood
The level of activity or privacy
You’re not just buying land.
You’re buying the experience around it.
Most mistakes happen when buyers:
Fall in love with a listing too quickly
Focus on price instead of fit
Assume they’ll “figure it out later”
That’s how people end up with:
Land they don’t use
Access that becomes frustrating
Plans that don’t work out
I worked with buyers who were set on a property they found online.
It checked a lot of boxes at first glance.
But once we walked through how they actually wanted to use it, we realized:
The access didn’t match their travel plans
The layout didn’t support their future build
Another option nearby fit much better
They changed direction—and were much happier for it.
I’m Amanda Oldfield, a Realtor with eXp Realty based in 100 Mile House, and I help buyers in the Interlakes find recreational properties that actually work for how they want to use them.
Instead of guessing, I help you:
Break down what you really need
Compare properties based on real use
Filter out options that don’t fit early
So you don’t waste time…
Or end up with the wrong property.
A good recreational property should:
Work now
Still work later
Fit how you actually live
Not just look good online.
If you’re trying to figure out whether a property will actually work for you, that’s exactly the kind of conversation worth having early.
You can:
Send me a listing you’re unsure about
Talk through your plans
Get a second opinion before making a trip
No pressure.
Just clarity before you commit.
